The Weeknd Teams Up with Binance for First-Ever ‘Crypt’ World Tour
The Weeknd has secured an official sponsor for his first stadium tour, becoming the first artist to integrate Web 3.0 technology into a world concert tour.
This week, Binance announced that it is partnering with the Canadian artist for his After Hours Til Dawn Tour to provide “an enhanced fan experience”. This “experience” will manifest in a number of ways, including through a collaboration with The Weeknd’s creative incubator, HXOUSE, to produce an exclusive NFT collection and co-branded branded merchandise.
The world‘s largest cryptocurrency exchange will also help create commemorative NFTs accessible through the virtual ticket stubs on the tour.
To kick off the tour with a charity bang, The Weeknd’s XO Humanitarian Fund, which benefits the United Nations-run World Food Program in the United States, will receive a $2 million donation from Binance, plus 5% of sales of all NFTs specially written and produced by the collaboration.
Like all NFTs, however, the value of these and ticket stub offers could be $0, $10,000, or both depending on the day. Binance’s post on the subject includes a “risk warning” touting the crypto’s “high market risk” and absolving the exchange of any liability for trade losses.
“Binance is all about community, people, inclusion. I was impressed with their focus on users and their innovative edge,” said The Weeknd. “It made perfect sense to work together and I can’t wait for fans to experience crypto in a creative avenue while supporting a good cause. There are so many possibilities with crypto and I think this is just the beginning.
The After Hours Til Dawn tour, which has been delayed due to the pandemic, will debut in Toronto at the Rogers Center on July 8 and continue with 16 more stops in the United States and one in Vancouver. International performance dates are expected to be announced this month.
